There are two massage therapy schools in Newport News. Each of them is a private, for-profit institution that presents diplomas to graduates. One school provides MT certificates, while the other one awards associate degrees.
Students complete classes, lab assignments, and clinical rotations to satisfy curriculum requirements. They can become eligible for licensure in the commonwealth of VIrginia after going to school for as little as two-thirds of a year.
The demand for MTs in this area mirrors the national trend, with about 25% job growth predicted for the 2016-26 decade.

This allied health and trades career school, with three campuses in Virginia, traces its history to 1969. It was long known as Tidewater Tech.
The 24-credit-hour MT certificate program requires eight months of full-time study. Enrollees choose whether to attend day or night classes. Graduates receive diplomas. The curriculum involves standard courses such as anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, and massage techniques and therapies.
Students also take classes in massage theory, integrative therapies, clinical massage, energy theory, myology, business and ethics, and success in college and the workplace. An exam review course prepares prospective practitioners for the national certification test.

MCI is part of a network of schools in VIrginia and the Carolinas called the East Coast Polytechnic Institute. Students pursue associate of applied science degrees in MT that take one and a half years to earn.
The curriculum features “comprehensive education” in medical and rehabilitative massage, according to the school. Area hospitals and other employers help design the coursework. Faculty members have “extensive real-world experience.” Working in clinical externships trains students in providing treatments to a range of clients with varying health conditions.
The Career Services Department assists with resume building, interview coaching, job fairs, and salary negotiation workshops.
